Fishing means waking up early.

Are you an early riser or a late sleeper? As long as I can remember, I've been an early riser. At 5:30 every morning, I pour a cup of coffee and start working on newsletters, accounting, or whatever needs to be done to keep the garden center running. I blame my grandfather. Growing up, I used to spend a week each summer with my grandparents up in Dunellon. We'd fish on the Rainbow River, watch the weather channel and drink caffeine-free diet pepsi with bugles and shrimp dip (strange the things you remember right . . . ) You have to get up early to go fishing, and we'd usually start with coffee and breakfast around 4 - 4:30. But for my grandparents that time wasn't all that early. Even on non-fishing days, the coffee started brewing around 5. Well you know how little boys are - I decided I wanted to be just like my grandfather, and so from that point on, I would wake up early. I think it annoyed my parents a bit, but they solved the problem by having me turn on sprinklers in the yard and practice the piano when I woke up,  while the rest of the family slept. (I'm not sure how they slept through my piano playing, but that's a different story.) So to this day, I wake up early, ready to go for the day.
It's time - get that garden planted!
Admittedly, I have a hard time making it past 9 in the evening (especially after a day of planting trees) but I really love that quiet early morning time when the rest of the world is asleep. It's a time filled with possibilities and the potential of a day yet to come.

Speaking of things yet to come, Fall starts tomorrow.  So, it's time to get your fall veggie gardens planted. This season's veggie starts have arrived, as well as a new assortment of GMO-free seeds. I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to an amazing Fall in the Garden. And will you look at that - it's 7 in the morning and my girls are starting to wake up. Time to go make breakfast . . .

Happy Gardening,
