Learning to compost at a young age.

Whew. . . We dodged a big one. Hurricane Irma could have been much worse, but a jog to the east kept the eye away from our area. Let's hope we don't have to go through this again any time soon. I spent the night sleeping in a closet with my daughters - and fortunately they didn't hear the howling winds. I just hope that this is their storm of a lifetime. But enough about Irma - I'm tired of thinking about her. Below is what was originally written for this newsletter - because even though we all have plenty to clean up in our yards, it is also time to start planting veggie gardens. So enjoy, and if you need a distraction from the Irma mess, come take a stroll through the beautiful flowers at Kerby's - somehow they seemed to survive the winds!

Apparently, I've been a composter since I was knee-high to a grasshopper.   And even today, I still have a spot in my yard to dump weeds, grass clippings and kitchen scraps. It's amazing how quickly it piles up, and it's a great addition to veggie gardens or even to flower beds for added nutrition. If you are interested in composting, the University of Florida has some great information on starting your own compost pile. Composting may not excite you, but I know that this time of year does (and no I don't mean because Stabucks released their pumpkin-spice latte . . . ) I know that you are excited, because it is time to start planting veggie gardens! Sow those seeds, plant your plants, it's time to go. It's easier than you think to create healthy, homegrown harvests and if you are looking for a little jumpstart to your veggie gardening know-how or if you just think your thumb isn't quite as green as you'd like it to be, then come join me this Saturday at 10am for the Fall Veggie Workshop. I'll tell you the best tips and tricks that I've learned over the years for growing fresh veggies - right in your own backyard. It's easier than you think and rewarding too!
