Now is the Time,
Kerby's is the Place

October 1, 2015

We can't wait for yummy bananas!
On my way out of the nursery the other day, I saw a big banana flower blooming in one of our banana trees. And when I say big, I mean huge. Before it started opening, it was almost 18 inches from one end to the other. Pretty soon, we'll have a harvest of yummy bananas. If that's not #yardtotable, I don't know what is. So what is growing in your garden? Whether you love fruit trees or prefer a veggie garden, both are probably loving the soaking rains this week and will thrive with the cooler temperatures headed our way.

It's time to decorate
your front porch for fall.
The cooler breeze in the air is motivating isn't it. It really makes you want to get out in the garden. And some beautiful weather couldn't come at a more perfect time. This Saturday, the Kerby's Pumpkin Patch opens, with lots of cool pumpkins and gourds. Perfect for this year's jack-o-lantern and front porch decorations. Take advantage of the beauty of fall in Florida and get ready for a wonderful fall season.

Happy Gardening,

Here is a beautiful shrub that creates a stunning focal point in your butterfly garden and provides the butterflies with huge amounts of nectar. After the blooms come golden berries, giving this plant its other name - golden dewdrop. It grows large, so give it some room and pretty soon all of the neighborhood butterflies will be hanging out in your garden.

Create a Miniature Garden

Miniature gardens are a fun way to be creative on a small scale. With a little imagination (and the instructions below), you can create a magical garden that is fun for the whole family.

Preparing to Plant
1. Choose your pot. If you are creating a covered terrarium, clear glass is best. For other miniature gardens, anything that will hold soil will work. Be sure to clean the container with hot, soapy water before using.

2. Select the decorations for your miniature garden. Fairy or gnome statues, miniature garden accents, stones, seashells . . . use your imagination and create a garden unique to your style.

3. Select the plants for your garden. Choose a few tall plants and a few short plants, to give some height variation.

4. Be sure you have your planting materials: soil, charcoal, sheet moss and gravel. Kerby's has premade kits that include all of these planting materials for $9.99.
