Now is the Time,
Kerby's is the Place

Joey playing the violin in Gainesville, Florida, circa 1988.

Last weekend, Kim and I got to see violin virtuoso Itzhak Perlman in concert. I've played the violin since I was 3, and around 30 years ago I saw him in concert and was wow-ed then by the joy he obviously had for playing the violin, and of course the speed of his fingers. He didn't disappoint this time either. From the haunting Theme from Schindler's List to a piece that I think he called Spanish Dance, where you couldn't tell how his bow and fingers managed to stay together, it was an evening of amazing music. What an art form. I recently heard a saying that went something like this: "We fill our space with paintings, we fill our time with music." And as I was listening to the amazing music, I started to think about how our gardens fill both space and time.

A moment in time at Kerby's Nursery.
We use the color and texture of flowers and leaves to beautifully fill our outdoor spaces with gardening masterpieces. But we also plant with an element of time in mind. A garden can't be enjoyed in one glance the way a painting can. A painting is painted and it doesn't change, but the garden is constantly changing. It grows. Flowers bloom and fade. Trees lose their leaves just to become green again in the spring. Bulbs go dormant underground and emerge fresh each spring. So, to me, the garden is a place where we fill both our space and time.

Fortunately, it doesn't take years of practice to garden, like painting or playing the violin do. All it takes is some beautiful flowers, some elbow grease and a little time outdoors. And you are in luck. It's spring and the flowers couldn't be more beautiful, the weather couldn't be more perfect for creating your own outdoor masterpiece.
