Discover the Fun of Gardening The Kerby's E-Newsletter for March 17, 2017 |
Since I was little, I've always loved growing fruit trees. Growing up, we had citrus, plums, peaches, apples, pecans, loquats and more all around our yard. One of my favorite trees was a huge peach tree that my siblings and I would sit in, eating peaches until our shirts were soaked with juice. And I've continued that tradition, trying to turn our landscape into a bit of a fruit forest. When we were landscaping our pool area, I used every spot I could to add a fruit tree, and over the years, they've grown in quite nicely. Too nicely in some cases - my macadamia nut is almost 20 feet tall! And with the mild winter (except for the last two nights! brrr....), everything is in bloom and set to have some amazing harvests this season. If you are interested in starting your own fruit forest, check out the fruit page for an idea of what you can grow in our area, and for some general info on growing fruits click here. This Saturday, we'll help you get your Fruit Forest started with our Growing Fruit Trees workshop. We'll share everything we know about growing healthy, happy fruit trees that give you the best harvests. And don't forget your green today! Happy St. Patrick's Day!
