One of my favorite things to do in the garden is to pick okra. It is something you have to keep up with. The first time I grew okra, I was so excited about the size of the pods, that I did all I could to encourage them to get bigger and bigger. Then I picked one and it was chewy, fibrous and, well, pretty much inedible. It was at that point that I realized picking okra is a daily chore. The pods grow at a furious pace going from flower to veggie in the span of 2 or 3 days. If you don't pick the pods young and tender, they quickly grow long and tough. To find all of the okra, you have to look really, really hard. The pods like to hide deep beneath the large leaves, masquerading as stems, and so just when you think you are finished picking, you've got to take a second closer look to make sure that you've truly harvested everything.

It's a daily chore, but I love it. Most mornings, I'll go out just before the girls wake up, let the chickens out and then take my harvest basket to check on the okra, along with our peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, and cucumbers. It's one of those simple tasks that gives order to daily life. In a world where our typical rhythms and schedules have gone out the window, I keep turning to my garden as a place to find peace and tranquility. We hope you are finding the same in your garden too.

Happy Gardening,

Peace in the Garden

The garden gives peace and tranquility. Even when the world is spinning around us and we feel like we are struggling to keep up, the garden can be a place of personal calm, healing and peace. Below are some of our favorite things to do to stay grounded in the garden.

Enjoy the Butterflies - You can't help but smile when you see a butterfly flutter past. Florida is home to over 80 species of native butterflies, so there is always a new one to discover. My favorite is the Florida state butterfly, the Zebra Longwing. It's long wings move gracefully as it slowly moves from flower to flower hunting for nectar. Plant beautiful pentas and passion flower (in shady areas) to attract these beauties to your garden.

Enjoy your Veggie Garden - It is too late now to plant a veggie garden, but don't worry, before you know it, the fall planting season will be here. In the meantime, if you did plant a spring garden, your veggies should be in full harvest mode. As I said in the story above, one of my favorite things to do is to get out and just enjoy walking through the garden. Harvesting here, picking a few bad leaves there and always scouting for pests trying to take my nearly-ripe tomatoes. If you want to plant some edibles now, it is a great time to plant fresh herbs.

Plant a Backyard Orchard - Picking fresh fruit from your backyard trees is another satisfying part of gardening. Everything tastes better when you grow it yourself and the feeling of accomplishment gives you the confidence to tackle just about anything. It's powerful knowing that you can grow your own food and provide for your family right from your garden.

Indoor Plants - Some days its rainy and we can't get out in the garden. And that's when we enjoy our houseplants. We love taking a little time each week to tend to our indoor plant babies, watching for new leaves, snipping off the bad ones, checking their water and giving them a little food. Bring nature indoors and keep connecting with the plant world.

Improve Your Health - Gardening is exercise. It's stress relief. It gets you out in the sun for a dose of Vitamin D. There are so many positive health benefits to getting outside and being active in your garden. When your health is better and your stress-levels are reduced, you are better equiped to handle the world around you. So spend some time in your garden to relax, to calm and to find some peace.
