Discover the Fun of Gardening The Kerby's E-Newsletter for January 26, 2017 |
Do any of you have a flower or plant that reminds you of a special time in your life? Of course, since you are a gardener, you may have a whole yard full of plants that bring back special memories. I love all different kinds of plants: fruit trees, roses, flowers, cactus, orchids . . . and for me, the more interesting the better. Wherever I am, or whatever I'm doing, I always notice the plants around me and many become part of the memories I'm making. Then, of course, I love to try and use those plants in my garden. One of my favorites is blooming right now, and it definitely brings back great memories.
We ended up doing some beautiful waterfall hikes in the mountains of Oahu and on one of them a chalice vine was growing up the side of a tall waterfall. The flowers blew us a way; they were the size of our hands and the color was rich and vibrant. Once back in Florida, we searched for the vine here and finally found one. We've had to replant a couple of times after hard freezes, but we love having this reminder of our wedding and honeymoon planted in our garden. It's a lot of memories stored in one plant. And that's just one more thing to love about gardening. It's more than planting, pruning and landscaping. It's creating a garden of memories, one plant at a time. So what are you waiting for, plant some memories today!

Delphinium One of our favorite cool-season annuals, the delphinium's electric blue is hard to miss. They are beautiful in cool-season flower beds and really make a statement planted in a container garden. |
