After a week or two of spring-like temperatures, it is nice to be back to more normal Florida winter weather. Of course normal for Seffner means 70 degree afternoons with abundant sunshine, not 50 below wind-chill like folks in the plains are experiencing. Have you seen trees around town that look like they are in full bloom with bright orange flowers? Well that isn't really the trees in bloom, it is florida flame vine. A beautiful evergreen vine with lovely green foliage that blooms in winter with amazing color. Try one on a fence, arbor or trellis for the brightest color on the block.  


Have some Scents in the Garden

Flowers are beautiful. Their colors brighten our landscapes and make us smile. Some flowers can be so much more. They can be a treat for the eyes and the nose. Below are some great plants that add lovely fragrance to a garden. Many can be planted in pots and strategically placed for maximum enjoyment. It only makes "scents" to plant these beautiful and sweet-smelling flowers.

Vietnam Snowflake Gardenia

A classic, sweet-scented flower. Cut flowers as they open and bring them into your house to really enjoy them.
Miami Supreme Gardenia

Other cool gardenia varieties: From the Gardener's Confidence Collection come Pinwheel and Heaven Scent gardenias. Two great bloomers with nice compact growth habits. Both in 10" pots for $19.99. From the Southern Living Plant Collection: Jubilation Gardenia, another medium-sized gardenia with lovely deep green foliage (10" pot - $29.99). And of course there are the classic dwarf gardenias: Radicans Dwarf and Frostproof, great for small landscapes (10" pot - $16.99). Remember that all gardenias prefer part shade and a rich, acid soil.
This variety of lavender has beautiful purple flowers and fragrant foliage. Both the foliage and flowers are great in bouquets. Plant lavender in well-drained areas.

If you don't want to see eye-to-eye with your neighbor, then plant this sweet-smelling hedge. It blooms in winter for nice little blooms when many other plants are not flowering.

The purple-leaf honeysuckle has a wonderful sweet smell. It is a fast growing vine that will grow up any arbor, trellis or across a fence. The flowers also produce lots of nectar which is great for butterflies.

The sweet almond bush is fast growing, easy-care and prefers part shade. It grows six to ten feet tall and is covered in sweet smelling flowers year-round.

A citrus tree is primarily planted for the delicious fruit, but when citrus are blooming, it is hard to miss the sweet smell. The fragrance carries all over a yard.
