Over-the-hill? I don't think so.

It's happening. A day that just kind of creeps up on you. One minute you are a free-wheeling youngster without a care in the world, and then, suddenly . . . you're 40. This spring, both Kim and I will celebrate our 40th birthdays. We are trying not to look at it as a mid-life crisis or over-the-hill. Instead, we keep telling ourselves that lots of things get better with age: wine, cheese, gardens, books, music to name a few. And really, age is only a number, isn't it? At least that's what 101 year old Great Grandma Kerby would say. If she heard us gripe about getting old, she'd say we don't know the half of it.  

Young at heart.

But she's also the one who told us that getting out in her garden is what helped her make it to such an amazing age. It reminds me of a quote from George Bernard Shaw: 'We don't stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.' Modify that quote for gardening and you get: 'We don't stop gardening because we grow old, we grow old because we stop gardening.' We can't halt the forward march of time, but we can make the best of each day, doing what we love and doing what adds the most to our lives. So I think we may celebrate this year with a great day in the garden and then cap it off with a bottle of old wine (1977 vintage).
